Inspiration Insider: Amy from Eat Pray Workout!

1. Tell me a little about yourself and your blog.

I’m a lawyer that loves keeping fit and healthy. I enjoy inspiring others to do the same through my healthy lifestyle blog, Eat Pray Workout. I’ve lived in Sydney, Brisbane and now Canberra, as my husband is an army officer so we move around! At the moment I am not working as a lawyer because 11 weeks ago I gave birth to my beautiful son, Finley. In between looking after him I write for Eat Pray Workout (and spend far too much time on instagram). I aim to encourage a holistic and most importantly a REALISTIC approach to health. I share a lot of my own experiences and what I’ve learnt from them. This includes spiritual, physical, emotional and social health matters. There is so much junk out there that just focus’ on the “PERFECT” life/body, which, lets be honest, is unattainable and impractical.

2. How did you get into the world of health and fitness and find your way to where you currently are?

When I started dating my husband in second year uni I wanted to be able to share his love for fitness and running, so I thought I better get moving! Then when I lost my adolescent metabolism I needed to know more about what foods I should be eating to keep healthy and not pile on the weight (apparently not giant freddos everyday!). As my fitness progressed, I wanted to nourish my body to help it perform at its best. Nutrition has also become important in helping me manage my moods and mental health.

3. Take us through a day in your life.

At the moment, my life changes daily depending on Finn’s needs. However, in addition to many hours spent feeding, playing with and settling Finn, I usually try to do a couple of the following:

  • Work on my blog;
  • Exercise – strength training or running;
  • Coffee or lunch with a friend; and/or
  • Cooking.

4. Do you have a favourite homemade/ to-go-to recipe you would like to share with us?

For breakfast, I love this banana cinnamon and almond smoothie.

For dinner, I love this healthy gluten free shepherds pie – it’s also a great meal you can freeze for those nights you just don’t have the time or energy to cook!

Editor's note: I am a huge fan of shepherds pie! This definitely has got me drooling.  

5. What is your view on health & fitness? Do you live by any particular food or training philosophy?

No I don’t live by any particular food philosophy, however if I had to pick one idea that’s closest to the way I view food it’s the 80/20 rule. That’s where you choose to eat healthy foods 80 per cent of the time, which then allows you to indulge in your favourite treats 20 per cent of the time.  I don’t think it’s good to cut out particular food groups but rather you should eat focused on getting the nutrients your body needs – whilst still enjoying the blessing that food is and enjoying a treat every now and again.

In terms of training styles, I change this regularly to keep it interesting and it also varies depending on the season in my life. Sometimes running is more enjoyable or easier to fit in than a gym session, but others I need the motivation of being with other people! I just listen to what my body wants and change it if I’m not enjoying it any more.   

6. What tip or advice would you give to anyone who is looking to live a healthier and fitter life?

Just start! Start with 3 small changes (eg. drink more water, walk once a day, say no to biscuits at work) and make these goals that you review your progress on weekly. If you’ve achieved them by the end of the week, create a new goal to focus on. If you haven’t, write down some things you could do to help you get there the following week. Don’t be harsh on yourself if you don’t make all 3 goals each week, it’s normal not to! If this happens, write down the things you did do well and resolve that you will continue to work on those goals next week. This is the key to reaching your goals and sustaining that outcome.
