HOW TO KEEP YOUR WEEKLY FOOD BUDGET UNDER $100
One of the keys to eating healthy on a budget is plan ahead and meal prep. Today, I will show you a detailed breakdown of how much you save by doing that and of course, teaching you how can you do the same too.
“For all the effort and time, there isn’t going to be much savings from eating in and cooking myself”
That’s definitely a huge misconception that many have around cooking at home - it costs as much as takeaway once you factor in the time and consideration. Let me tell you now, that’s not true and you will find out why shortly!
I am not quite a finance or home-saver guru but I have spent a good amount of time testing and trialing out different ways to bring my food budget down to $100 a week! So, this is simply a real life example of how I do it!
HOW TO KEEP YOUR WEEKLY FOOD BUDGET UNDER $100
Before we dive into the numbers and details, here are just some background information and assumptions I have made with respect to the calculations and breakdown:
- Week is based on working week, ie Monday to Friday
- Original budget figure of $200 is under the assumption that you do not cook at all and eat out/ takeaway for all of your meals. I have only ever done this a few times a year personally.
- I am a savoury person so healthy bacon and egg roll/ wrap is my breakfast of choice, especially if I am training hard. And, unfortunately, that's how much it costs for me if I were to grab a bacon & egg roll from my local cafe every morning.
- Lunch + Dinner prices is based on the average costs of meals I can purchase based on where I used to work (Surry Hills) and live (North Shore).
- I am fine with eating the same type of food for an entire week (not more!) but if you are not - try mixing things up with different spices.
- Personally, I work best with high fat and protein diet. If you are plant-based or vegetarian, feel free to replace the protein/ fat with lentils, beans and chickpeas. (They will be even cheaper!).
- This comparison is based on one person household.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR WEEKLY FOOD BUDGET UNDER $100 by cooking yourself and meal planning?
Breakfast - Bacon and Egg Toast/ Wrap with a strong latte.
- Replace store bought BAE toast with a homemade saves me $19.81 a week
- If you have a Nespresso or coffee machine, the savings will be more than $19.81!
- BONUS: Extra Siracha sauce with no extra cost
Lunch - Turkey Mince Zoodles
- Cook up a week’s worth of turkey mince on the weekend only costs you $15.71 a week (that’s right - a kilo worth of turkey mince with zoodles costs you less than $20 a week!)
- That’s over $45 in savings each week!
Dinner - Grilled Hoki Fillets with Mixed Vegetables
- As a quick an easy option at night, go for the frozen ingredients such as fish fillets and vegetables.
- They are pretty cheap and easy to whip up too - a way better option than your local take out!
- Total costs = $14 a week, saving myself a whopping $48.50 a week!
Snacks - Fruits and Chobani Greek Yogurt
- Go for fresh fruits, yogurt, trail mix, rice crackers - something healthy and portable.
- Fruits and Chobani yogurt are my snacks of choice!
- Instead of $11.50 a week, I am only paying $8.54!
- By eating in throughout the week and cooking in advance, you spend $75.94 as opposed to $200, giving you a total of $124.06 per week!
- That means you are able to treat yourself with 2 take out/ restaurant meals during the week with the extra $20 bucks (assuming your weekly saving goal for food is $100!)
- Of course, the savings will change depending on your meals for the week but it shouldn’t deviate that much if you stick to our eating healthy on a budget tips.
Just a quick reminder on how a simple lifestyle adjustment by meal planning and meal prepping will save you at least $100 per week.
$100 multiply by 45 weeks - that’s at least $4,500 in savings a year!
(I like to be conservative and allocate the remaining 7 weeks to special occasions and festive season :P)
