The first step to living that healthy lifestyle is - realising that healthy living should be simple & enjoyable!

"How many times did you find yourself “I’m going to be healthy this week and hit the gym everyday” only to end up with Tim Tams, wine and Netflix every other day?"

"How many times did you “try” to quit sugar, quit gluten, quit carbs, quit fats, quit dairy only to find yourself either 1) very grumpy or 2) relapsing back to your old habits?"

"Wouldn’t it be nice to incorporate some lasting healthy habits into your daily routine so that you feel amazing and energised every day, without having to go through any sort of extreme restrictions?"

"Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy a cupcake, pizza, wine, ice cream or loaded fries without the guilt engulfing you right after?

I rest my case.

 

I am here to break your bubble and debunk any myth that says healthy lifestyle is complicated, difficult and expensive.

No, you don’t need to add a scoop of mushroom elixir into every meal, neither do you need to hit the gym 6 times a week (unless that’s what you enjoy or you’re prepping for a special event)

I am not saying that it is going to be a breeze but it is a lot simpler than you think and yes, when done right, it can actually be enjoyable!

In today’s post, I will be showing you all the DLs (down lows) and sharing all my tips & tricks on how YOU too, can live that simple, enjoyable and sustainable healthy lifestyle!

1. Nutrition

If you’re a part of the general population, with no medical conditions or specific food allergies or intolerance, nutrition is pretty straight- forward.

There are tonnes of trends and fads around the internet - but honestly, they aren’t rocket science and shouldn't be complicated!

Just practise the following and you are well on your way to living that healthy life:

  • Eat real, whole foods - veggies, meat, seafood, legumes….
     

  • Fuel your body with nutrients-dense food - LOtsa greens, good fats & carbs, protein… refer to point A)
     

  • Minimised processed food & refined sugar - note I say, minimise NOT eliminate because sometimes you need that Snickers Bar to stay sane

It is that simple - supplements and superfood are great-to-have but not necessity.

 

Start with the basic and slowly explore to different ways of eating once you master the basic. You wouldn’t run before you learn how to crawl as a baby - then why would you complicate things with macros, intermittent-fasting, keto or paleo diet without having the basic habits in place?

Don’t get me wrong - I am a huge advocate of IIFYM and I think everyone should learn how to track them at some point for their own benefits but that should be lesson 2 in nutrition ;)

2. Active Living

Sedentary lifestyle is almost as bad as smoking - this is why staying active and moving as much as possible is the key to a healthy lifestyle. There are many ways to do it and no, you don’t have to force yourself to the gym if that’s not your thing.

In order to make active living as enjoyable for you and does not feel like a chore, focus on finding your active passion!

What the heck is active passion - I hear you ask whilst raising an eyebrow.

Active passion is any physical activity that brings you joy while moving your body.

 

Here are some of the ideas to get your heart rate up and staying active:

  1. Aim for at least 5,000 steps a day (and slowly work your way up to 10k!)

  2. Make a point to get up and walk every hour

  3. Aim to workout at least 4 times a week (the key here is to do something you enjoy and work around your lifestyle. There are tonnes of interesting and fun fitness classes around these days or if you’re more of a home person, plenty of home workouts you could do too :D)

  4. Go outdoors on the weekend - whether it is the national park or beach or simply walking around your neighbourhood or your local cafe, just go out. Fresh air is good for the soul ;)

  5. Incorporate some body weight compound movements (squats, lunge, push up, plank) right before you shower. All you need is 5 minutes (no excuses!) and Tim Ferris is a huge fan of this.

A little challenge for you:

If you are currently not very active, your challenge this week will be trying out one of the above and slowly discover your active passion

If you are already pretty active (training at least 3 times a week), add in an extra day of activity (whether it's a walk by the beach, swimming or hiking) and try something different )if you've always been a weights person, try Barre or circuit training and vice-versa!

3. Sleep & rest

Part of living that healthy life is sleep and rest. 

Rest goes beyond a good night sleep, I'm also referring to rest days in between training. 

This is specifically true for my active readers who love lifting irons at the gym or a HIIT addict. 

Your muscles grow outside the gym when you’re not exercising! The muscle fibres that were damaged during the workout sessions recover and increase in size on your rest days. 

PS: A little fun fact for you here : People who are well rested lose 56% more fat than those who are sleep deprived.

Here are some ideas and inspirations for you to wine down,
de-stressed, relax and sleep well: 

  • JOMO instead of FOMO - Joy of Missing Out is the new black. Learn to say "no" to invites - you don't have to attend every social events you were invited to. 
     
  • Daily Mindfulness Meditation Practice - Take a couple of minutes out and practice mindful meditation, it helps you focus and calm you down. 
     
  • Take Social Media/ Technology Timeout - I, too, am guilty of mindless scrolling and spending way too much time on social media than I should. Try to do something else when you're tempted to find out where your ex' little sister is hanging out. 
    My tip: I've moved all social media apps into Page 2 of my phone and Kindle app on Page 1. Every time I've the urge to check Instagram or Facebook, I read a few pages on my Kindle instead.
     
  • Avoid caffeine after 3pm - this is pretty self-explanatory. 
  • Go outdoors & get some fresh air
  • Workout or Yoga
  • Essential oils & candles in your living room/ bedroom
     
 

4. Mindset

The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe 100 percent. -Arnold Schwarzenegger-

Mindset is everything.

I want you to read through the next few sentences mindfully and really registering them in your subconscious mind.

  • Understand that health & fitness is a lifestyle - it should work around your life not the other way round. Your life should never revolve around the need of “being healthy”.

  • Focus on the fact that you’re on a journey - there will be times where you’re faced with obstacles and get lost somewhere along the way but it is ok because every step you take brings you closer to your goal.

  • Recognise little wins along the way - this is probably the MOST powerful mindset to have and practise. Always look for the positive in every “negative” - that extra rep, that extra kilo, that macros, no matter how “little” they are, those are wins that you should recognise and be proud of!

  • Go easy on yourself - we can be our harshest critique sometimes. As per all the points above, this is a lifestyle and you’re on a journey. You’re not competing on stage nor have a bikini photoshoot tomorrow - went a little overboard with your pizza or cookie? Well, you enjoyed that didn’t you? Pull up your big girl (or big boy) pants tomorrow and get on with life. Maybe add in a few burpees if you’re feeling the energy from all your treats the night before ;)

PS: I always look forward to my pizza nights (or refeed nights as I like to call them) because that means I can lift heavier at the gym the next day.


5. K.I.S.S. - Keep it small & simple. 

As mentioned at the start of this post, this is meant to help you live a simple, enjoyable and sustainable healthy lifestyle and feel your absolute best.

This is why we are going back to basics and keeping everything small & simple.  

Simple & intuitive cooking

We are all hustlers and spending hours in the kitchen to whip up a meal just doesn’t seem like a good way to spend your free time. This is why intuitive cooking is a great way to make cooking a little more enjoyable.

Unless you’re baking, you should never feel the need to follow a recipe strictly.

1) Everybody has their personal preferences (Mine is coriander, chilli & garlic - so attractive, I know :P)

2) Cooking should not be stressful and worrying about how your food is going to taste because you don’t have saffron in your pantry is not good for business.  

Most of the recipes here on Eat This Burn That are extremely simple - they are based around different spices & herbs combinations, usually less than 10 ingredients. Hence, if you miss out on an ingredient or two, it is not going to alter the taste too greatly!

 

HIIT for the time poor

HIIT ( High Intensity Interval Training) is probably one of the most effective workout when you are time poor. It elevates your heart rate, utilises your bodyweight to build them muscle babies and strength and it will be done in 15-30 minutes (depending on your session)

6. Make it work around your lifestyle

If you want it to be sustainable and enjoyable, you have to make it work and fit around your lifestyle. Build and form habits that suit your life. Strive for balance. Be disciplined with your routine but allow room for special events and “life happens”.

Planning is key but be flexible with your approach.

Decision fatigue is real. When you have a zillion other things to worry about life, the last thing you want to think about is what to have for lunch or dinner. To avoid heading to your closest Chinese takeaway joint or ordering Uber Eats, be prepared and set yourself up for a busy week.

You do not have to plan to the tee but having a basic structure of what your meals and activities/trainings are going to be will make your life a whole lot easier. Here are some of the things to consider:

  • How many meals will you be eating in and out during the week?

  • How many meals do you need to prepare for the week? What are the ingredients you need? Have you scheduled your meal prep time?

  • What activities or training will you be doing this week?

If something last minute comes up - be flexible and open to changes. Most often than not, we place too much stress on ourselves when something doesn’t go to plan.
