Gut Health 101 - All you need to know about Gut Health!

Unless you have been leaving under the rock, you would have came across the term "gut health". But what exactly is gut health, one may ask? Well, your gut is where 70% of your immune system lies, where you make nutrients, make detoxifying enzymes, metabolise hormones and neutralise pathogens.

Your gut is the key to good health and radiant beauty.

To give you a better understanding about gut health, we have expert comments by Carla Oates, the founder of The Beauty Chef - a naturalist who is passionate about nature to give us some down low about gut health today!

1. Why is gut health so important to us?

By healing your gut, you feel more energised - think about the supercharged nutrients going straight into your body, as the food is already broken down and your body doesn't have to work hard to get them.

You will notice your skin looking better, more radiant, and hair and nails, stronger and more lustrous. You will find that your tummy is flatter, bowel habits more regular and you may feel more content (your neurotransmitters are also made in your gut). By healing your gut, you help to take the load off your liver too.

Over time, if you make other lifestyle changes that support good gut health, you will notice a huge difference in the way you feel, your skin and your weight.

2. How does gut health affect beauty?

At The Beauty Chef, we believe beauty begins in your belly. Where there is gut inflammation, there will be skin inflammation and conversely, studies show those with healthy, balanced gut microbiota have a better fatty acid profile in their skin, meaning their skin is more hydrated, plumper and moisturized.

3. Do you have any tips on improving gut health?

Eat lots of fermented foods and where possible, avoid processed food and unhealthy chemicals that compromise gut health. Eat low HI food - low human intervention food. Lots of whole foods and clean protein; an abundance of plants, grass fed meats, wild fish, organic nuts and seeds.

When it comes to cleansing your body, nothing flushes your system as effectively as good old H2O - just make sure it's pure and filtered so you're not replacing one toxin with another. By adding a squeeze of alkalising fresh lemon juice to hot water in the mornings, you'll not only kick-start your metabolism for the day but also help cleanse your liver, too.

4. What is your favourite gut friendly recipe?

I really enjoy my Black Bean and Cacao Protein Truffle or Chocolate Bliss Balls . I especially love the Vanilla in this delicious, Warming Spiced Smoothie Bowl. There are lots more recipes in my new cookbook.
